The garage is one part of the house that people don’t really clean that often. That’s not really surprising considering that all we really do with it is move our car in and out of the garage itself.  If you check your garage now, there’s a good chance that it’s very cluttered and hard to go through.

Cleaning your garage and keeping it tidy should be a practice that you should begin doing. There are many benefits to keeping your garage tidy. Your safety and security are just one of the benefits. Of course, another benefit is that a clean garage is just overall more pleasant for your home.

You might not be used to cleaning your garage for now. The good news is that it’s easy to do so even with the most cluttered of garages out there. Here are 7 cleaning tips that you might want to keep in mind when finally mustering up the energy to clean your garage.

    Plan Ahead

Before anything else, make sure that you plan ahead before you begin cleaning your garage. Ideally, you’d want to set aside a day or two to be able to clean your garage fully. Don’t try to rush cleaning your garage as you might end up overlooking some problems in doing so.

Make a checklist of the things you want to accomplish and stick to your plan. The key to organizing and cleaning is to be organized yourself.

    Move Out Your Car First

This is a very basic tip and you should’ve probably known this by now. Do not clean your garage while your car is still inside. It will give you less space to move in and it’s also harder for you to do it as well. Take your car, move it out and park it in the driveway temporarily.

While you’re at it, you might want to begin preparing some necessary equipment to begin cleaning your garage with. These include pressurized hoses, scrubbers, a vacuum, and of course, your cleaning agent of choice. Preparation is the key to maintaining your garage and this is also one of the most crucial tips to keep in mind.

    Invest In A Containment Mat

Do you find your garage constantly getting muddied up and dirty after driving on a rainy day? Believe it or not, this is a more common problem than you think. It’s so problematic, most homeowners just let it be and leave the mud out to dry. Of course, that’s very unsanitary to do so.

A good way to prevent this problem from ever happening is to buy a containment mat. Good containment mats help keep your garage tidy by preventing the mud or dirt from getting to the floor. To put it simply, a containment mat acts as a covering for your garage’s floor.

Aside from mud and dirt, containment mats also work well when it comes to preventing snow from getting the floors dirty. While a bit on the pricey side, containment mats are a good investment because they prevent a lot of the problems that come with dirty tires. Every car lover will appreciate this.

    Remove Certain Items

Your garage shouldn’t act as a storage room for all of your items. While it does act as a good storage room for some things, there are some items that you definitely don’t want hanging around in your garage. These are more for safety concerns and not just simply because they keep the place dirty.

The things you should remove include paint cans, propane tanks, paper goods, pet food, and appliances. Only keep things like the car and your tools inside the garage. The lesser stuff you put inside, the easier it will be to maintain the garage’s cleanliness and tidiness.

Coat The Floor With Epoxy Coating

Once you tidy up the garage, you might be taken aback by how bad the floor looks, especially if it doesn’t have any coating whatsoever. One way to resolve this problem is by having your garage floors painted with epoxy coating.

Epoxy coating not only covers your garage floor with something more pleasing to the eyes, but it’s also something that’s easier to clean than traditional flooring as well. It’s as easy as mopping the floor down. Furthermore, the epoxy coating can prevent skid marks.

    Make A Floor Plan

You’ll find yourself constantly cleaning and tidying up your garage. If you see yourself doing this again in the future, a good way to prepare is to make a floor plan. It doesn’t have to be too complex or detailed. Just make sure that the floor plan details where the items inside the garage go.

Once you do make a floor plan, make sure that you stick to it. The main enemy of tidiness is being disorganized. The more organized you are, the easier it will be to continuously clean your garage as well. Floor plans are also a good way to help you think of how you can redesign the area in the future.

    Install Wall Shelves

If you do put most of your tools and stuff inside the garage, then you might want to install shelves inside the garage. This will allow you to easily organize your tools and power tools so that they don’t just lay around on the floor. It will also make it easier for you to find the tools that you need when you need them.

First and foremost, you wouldn’t want your tools lying around the garage in the first place. That’s a big hazard waiting for you and in most cases, your kids who are very young could easily pick up the tools and play around with them. That being said, install wall shelves at a certain height that kids won’t be able to reach.

Your garage deserves as much love as any other part of the house. Always try to maintain tidiness inside your garage as it’s for your comfort and safety at the same time. Though a bit tiring, the effort you put into cleaning your garage will be worth it in the end.
